You are planning to get a civil wedding in Quebec. You fulfill all the conditions to get married in Quebec : you both have the legal age to get married in Quebec, both spouses are freely consenting and free of matrimonial ties and the two of you will be present at your marriage. You are now ready. Or are you?
The officiant has to get a proof of all those requirements. What are the documents necessary for a wedding in Montreal or in the province of Quebec in general? What pieces of identification or other documentation will you need to provide to the officiant?
Documents for the future spouses
- Proof of identity of the spouses: Two legible and unexpired pieces of identification, at least one of which contains a photo, such as a driver’s licence, health insurance card or passport.
- Proof of age of the future spouses: birth certificate.
- Proof of marital status of the future spouses.
If the future spouse is single:
- no document is required.
If the future spouse is single following a civil union or annulled marriage:
- A certified copy of the annulment judgment is necessary.
If the future spouse is single following a dissolved civil union, he/she will need:
- An authentic copy of the joint declaration of dissolution received before a notary or certified copy of the judgment dissolving the civil union.
In the case that you or your spouse-to-be are divorced:
- A certified copy of the divorce certificate or certified copy of the irrevocable divorce judgment.
You are widowed or your partner is widowed?
- You should provide a death certificate of the deceased or copy of the death certificate of the deceased.
Documents for the witnesses
At the initial meeting with your officiant, the spouses must be accompanied by a witness who attests to the information contained in the civil marriage publication such as the names of the spouses, their dates and places of birth.
The witness must present to the marriage officiant two legible and unexpired pieces of identification, at least one of which contains a photo, such as a driver’s licence, health insurance card or passport.
Please note: The two witnesses who will be present on the day of the celebration of the civil marriage (they can be the same as the witness in the initial meeting or they can be different persons) do not have to present any identification.
